Sir Walter Raleigh is executed for a failed expedition to exploit Guiana.
The execution took place at the Tower of London.
Raleigh asked to see the axe that was to be used to behead him & said, This is a sharp Medicine, but it is a Physician for all Diseases.
Following the custom of the time, his head was embalmed & presented to his wife.
She carried it with her at all times until she died 29 years later at the age of 82.
