1755
Charles Lawrence, British governor of Nova Scotia, orders the French settlers in Acadia deported if they do not sign an unconditional oath of allegiance to the English crown.
Of the 10,000 in the area, 8,000 were expelled over the next six years, as recorded in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem “Evangeline.”.
Many settled in Louisiana and became what are now known as Cajun.
1871 
Great Chicago Fire began.
Over 250 people died, 90,000 were left homeless when proportedly Mrs O'Leary's cow kicked over a lantern.
Also lost in the fire was the original Emancipation Proclamation.
200 miles north of Chicago, fire destroys Peshtigo, Wisconsin, completely razing the town & killing 1500 of its inhabitants.

Author and illustrator Richard Sharpe Shaver (Amazing Stories) born in Berwick, Pennsylvania.
1918
Corporal Alvin C. York kills 28 German soldiers and captures 132 in the Argonne Forest in France.
He is awarded the Medal of Honor.

Prohibition begin as Congress passes the Volstead Act, which enforced the ban on the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Sci Fi writer Frank Herbert (Dune) born in Tacoma, Washington.
1939
Author and critic Harvey Pekar (American Splendor) born in Clevland, Ohio.
His epitaph reads: Life is about women, gigs, an' bein' creative.
1949
Actress Sigourney Weaver (Alien) born in New York.
Her original name was Susan, but took her professional name from a list of Jay Gatsby's guests in the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby.
1956
NY Yankee Don Larson pitches the only perfect game in World Series history.
Larson threw 97 pitches, faced 27 batters, struck out 11 to lead the Bronx Bombers to a 2-0 shutout of the Brooklyn's Dodgers in Game 5.
