Sir Walter Raleigh is executed for a failed expedition to exploit Guiana.
The execution takes place at the Tower of London.
Raleigh asks to see the axe that is to be used to behead him & said, "This is a sharp Medicine, but it is a Physician for all Diseases."
Following the custom of the time, his head is embalmed & presented to his wife.
She carries it with her at all times until her death 29 years later at the age of 82.
